SODOTO (See One, Do One, Teach One)

 SODOTO

(See One, Do One, Teach One)

We are sure you have heard this expression a time or two, but did you know that you can apply it to Family History?

The use of the phrase “See One, Do One, Teach One” began with the medical field.  It was used originally in surgery where a skilled surgeon would show a resident how to do a surgery technique, then the resident would do it, and finally he/she would teach it to another person. While they no longer use it in most hospitals today, this teaching/learning method is widely used in other fields of education. Family History is no exception.

See One – Observe how a task is completed

Do One – Using hands on experience, complete the task yourself

Teach One – Show another person how to complete the task

Repeat!

We do not normally give challenges but this week we would like to challenge everyone to use the SODOTO method to learn a new task in family history.  The challenge is as follows:

1.    See One – Watch another person perform a task in family history that you do not know how to complete. You can also view free online courses on family history tasks in your FamilySearch account.  Just follow the steps below:

a.    Log into FamilySearch

b.   Click on the Help logo in the upper right hand corner of your home page (the question mark in the circle)

c.    Choose Help Center

d.   Choose View All in the middle of the page under the row of colored circles

e.    Choose Online Courses

f.     Choose the course you would like to explore.  The most popular courses are featured at the top such as Getting started, Search and Research. They usually have more than one lesson and you can do them in order from the top or choose the one that interests you the most

g.    Watch the video and take notes if that will help you remember the information

2.   Do One – Using the information you just learned, complete the task on your family tree or work on researching information on your family members.

3.   Teach One – Teach a family member or a friend to do the same thing you just learned.  You can use the videos and your experience in completing the task to help as you teach them.

Let us know if we can help you in your SODOTO!  We are here for you!

As you celebrate this 4th of July, remember your ancestors who helped make our country great with their everyday contributions & lessons.  We appreciate them all! Brother and Sister May
