Heber 3rd Ward Family History Contest!

 Dear Brothers and Sisters,

I have been waiting for the BIG announcement to update the blog.  If you were in Relief Society or Elders Quorum, you heard it.  The Heber 3rd Ward is holding a Family History contest!  Last night Sister Miller posted our weekly bulletin and added a small poster to the email that was sent out.  Below you will see a larger copy of that poster.

Several months ago, the Ward Family History plan began to take shape.  With input from the Young Women and Young Men, the Elder’s Quorum and the Relief Society, the plan to help our ward Gather Israel was formed, modified and refined.  A couple of weeks ago, it was “soft Introduced” in the joint Elder’s Quorum/Relief Society Meeting.  Today it was officially introduced to all organizations.

Simply, it goes like this:

Outside the Bishop’s office will be a poster with a Family Tree on it.  It will have 5 branches – one for each of the organizations in our ward – Elder’s Quorum, Relief Society, Young Men, Young Women and Primary.  Located by the tree will be an envelope with leaf stickers.  We as members of the ward will fill our branch with leaves when we do the work of the Lord in Gathering Israel.  All groups can use the green leaves – but Primary will use the Orange Leaves on their branch. Each leaf represents a point for a family history task completed and each member can earn only 1 point during the contest period.  The contest starts on Sunday, February 27 and runs through Sunday, March 27.

To earn a point, any adult or youth must do one of the following:

v  Take a family name to the Temple

v  Upload a family record or memory to FamilySearch

v  Index one batch of records

Primary children can earn one point by doing one of the following:

v  Help with a Family Home Evening Lesson on Family History

v  Have their photo taken in front of a Temple

v  Read a story about an ancestor on the family tree app or on FamilySearch on the computer

Primary children should be the one initiating the task but can be assisted by older siblings or parents.  As you get excited about competing and earning “ice Cream” they will want you to help them earn” ice cream” too!

Competing against each other for this first go-round will be:  The Young Men against the Young Women & a three-way contest between the Elders Quorum, Relief Society and Primary!

At the end of the contest period, the organizations with the most leaves on their branch will be treated to an Ice Cream Social!  In addition to this enticing reward they will be assisting the Spirit of Elijah to grow in our ward.  And they will get bragging rights!

This is just the beginning of many contests that will be held throughout the year.  We hope you will feel the Spirit of Elijah as you work to grow your Family History branch on the Bishop’s wall.

If you need help completing these tasks, please let us know.  We are here for you!  (Can you taste the ice cream yet?  😉)
