The Last of the Tools

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Once again we are discussing the Tools section on the family member’s page (right column) in your FamilySearch account.  Since there are just a few left, I have combined them in this one post.

The first tool is Merge By ID.  When you find there are duplicate entries for the same person (or when you suspect the entries have a duplicate) you can merge and review by clicking on the first tool – Possible Duplicates.  However, you can also review them by entering the ID number of the person you suspect is a duplicate entry. Click on Merge By ID.  FamilySearch will verify the ID number you entered is valid and you can click on Continue.  Review all of the information carefully. When you are certain, the two people are the same, choose Finish the Merge.

Remember, when merging, it can be undone if you make a mistake, but it takes time and sometimes is quite a headache.  Carefully check all information before you complete a merge.  This may save a lot of frustration later.

The second tool is Report Abuse.  When clicking on this, a box appears with a warning and a link to the Conditions of Use.  After reading the conditions, if you would like to report abuse to the administrators, choose the type of abuse and explain your concern in the box provided.  Then click on “Submit”

The last tool is Delete Person.  This usually says “Unavailable” as well.  You cannot delete a person that has been entered If there are more than one contributor to that person’s page or if the person was entered by someone other than yourself. The site will give you options to:

1.       Edit the person’s information

2.       Merge the person with a potential duplicate

3.       Remove or replace the relationships

If you choose Remove or replace relationships, the person’s page will still be listed in FamilySearch but will no longer be attached to your family member.

If none of these options address the concern you have or the person entered never existed, you may contact FamilySearch and they will assist you.  Go to Get Help (the ? in the circle at the top right hand corner of the page), choose Contact Us at the bottom of the drop down list.  Click on the link and a page with contact resources will appear for your convenience.

FamilySearch has given us great tools to use in researching and recording the information for our family members.  By using these tools we will be submitting accurate information so the work can be done correctly in the Temple.

Remember you are not alone in doing this important work.  Let us know how we can help!  Brother and Sister May
